Whether for home or factory use, when selecting metal cutting tools, we primarily focus on three aspects: Material Thickness, Precision Requirements, and Operating Environment. We classify tools based on their function into: Hand Tools, Portable Power Tools, Stationary Cutting Equipment, and High-Precision Machine Tools.
I. Hand Tools
Features: No power supply needed, compact but generally long in shape, flexible and maneuverable, suitable for thin plates including wood and metal sheets.
Traditional Hacksaw
Principle: Manually operated, blade cuts back and forth.
Applications: Temporary repairs, cutting thin-walled pipes, small diameter round bars.
Advantages: Extremely low cost, not restricted by site conditions.
Disadvantages: Very low efficiency, physically demanding, rough cut.
Derivative Products: Fret Saw (for fine curve cutting), Mini Hacksaw Frame (for tight spaces).
Manual Shearing Tools
Applications: Specifically for wood or thin metal sheets (0.5mm - 2mm).
Types: Straight/Bent Tin Snips (manual sheet cutting), Aviation Snips (suitable for curves, effort-saving), Bench Shears (mounted on a workbench, utilizes lever principle for effort-saving and straighter cuts). Note: Some blades are specifically for wood, while others are suitable for both thin metal sheet and wood cutting.
II. Portable Power Tools
Features: Hand-held operation, portable and flexible, the most convenient and efficient products for daily maintenance, installation, and demolition.
Angle Grinder
Power Source: Corded (220V, can also be customized to meet local voltage requirements) or Lithium-Ion battery (cordless brushless is currently the main product). However, the energy storage capacity of cordless lithium tools cannot yet support high-power applications; corded products are generally more stable. If lithium tools are made powerful enough, it can easily cause motor burnouts or other failures – current technology cannot perfectly solve this issue. Poorer quality tool bodies can lead to quality problems, sometimes feeling toy-like.
Applications: Cutting small pipes, angle iron, rebar; grinding welds; rust removal.
Consumables: Uses resin cutting wheels (most common), diamond blades (for cutting tiles/stone), stainless steel cutting discs (for heavy-duty outdoor use and wood), grinding wheels. The compatibility of the tool and the quality of the consumables are two separate issues. The quality of both products together determines the efficiency and cost of the cutting job. Good quality cutting discs last a long time, while poor ones are short-lived, representing a significant cost factor.
Caution: High-speed rotation, high risk of danger. Safety goggles must be worn, and the safety guard must never be removed.
Extended Products: Straight Grinder (suitable for deep grinding), Die Grinder (uses small grinding points/mounted points, suitable for fine finishing work).
Portable Band Saw
Applications: Cutting large diameter pipes, irregularly shaped steel, structural sections.
Advantages: Compared to an angle grinder, it provides a smoother cut with less burr, higher safety, and can cut large cross-section materials.
Product Forms: Handheld electric/pneumatic band saw (pipe cutting on construction sites), Benchtop small band saw machine (for small workshop cutting tasks).
Reciprocating Saw
Applications: Demolition work, pipe maintenance, cutting thin-walled metal.
Advantages: The reciprocating blade action makes it suitable for tight spaces or situations requiring "plunge cuts" into the material. Blades are available for different materials (wood/metal/plastic).
Common Product: Sabre Saw.
III. Stationary Rapid Cutting Equipment
Features: Suitable for batch cutting and cutting to length, high efficiency. Standard equipment in workshops and construction sites.
Abrasive Cut-Off Saw / Chop Saw
Commonly known as: Toothless saw, Section Cutting Machine.
Applications: Construction sites, cutting stock in mechanical processing workshops, cutting steel pipes, angle steel, channel steel.
Advantages: High rotational speed, fast cutting speed.
Disadvantages: Burn marks and discoloration at the cut, large burrs, significant noise and sparks.
Metal Cold Saw
Applications: Stainless steel, round bars, precision cutting.
Principle: Uses carbide-tipped saw blades, rotates at low speed, cuts through shearing action.
Advantages: Bright, burr-free cuts, high precision, no heat-affected zone on the material, long blade life.
High-end Representative: Automatic Cold Flying Saw (for continuous cutting in production lines).
Band Saw Machine
Applications: Cutting large cross-section steel, die steel, often requires customization.
Advantages: Smooth cutting, narrow kerf (saves material), suitable for various solid materials.
Classification: Horizontal Band Saw (standard cutting-to-length), Vertical Band Saw (suitable for curves/irregular shapes).
Punching & Shearing Composite Equipment
Applications: Sheet metal fabrication, dimensions often customized.
Types: Punch Press (uses dies for punching), Shearing Machine (specifically for straight cuts on sheets), Combined Punching and Shearing Machine (can shear plate, cut angles, and punch holes).
IV. High-Precision & Specialized Cutting Equipment
Features: Relies on CNC technology, designed for high hardness, high precision, irregular shapes, or special process requirements. This field evolves rapidly, with tools often custom-designed to meet specific customer needs regarding workspace size and functionality.
CNC Machine Tools (Machining)
Principle: Removes material through turning or milling operations to achieve separation/cutting.
Applications: Manufacturing parts, machining complex contours.
Advantages: Highest precision (IT7-IT9 grade levels), capable of machining complex shapes.
Wire EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) Machine
Principle: Uses electrical spark erosion, employing a molybdenum wire (for high-speed WEDM) or brass wire (for low-speed WEDM) as the electrode.
Applications: Die and mold manufacturing, hardened steel, carbide.
Advantages: Extremely high precision (up to ±0.002mm), smooth surface finish, can cut any electrically conductive material unaffected by material hardness.
Laser Cutting Machine
Principle: High-energy laser beam melts/vaporizes the material.
Applications: Sheet metal fabrication (primarily thin plates), sign making, precision machinery.
Advantages: High speed, narrow kerf, small heat-affected zone, smooth cut edge.
Classification: Fiber Laser Cutting Machine (mainstream for cutting metal, energy-efficient), CO2 Laser Cutting Machine (can cut non-metals).
Plasma Cutting Machine
Principle: Uses a high-temperature plasma arc to melt the metal and blow it away.
Applications: Cutting medium to thick plates (carbon steel, stainless steel, non-ferrous metals).
Advantages: Fast cutting speed, especially suitable for thick plates (lower cost compared to laser for such thicknesses).
Forms: Handheld Plasma Cutter (on-site work), CNC Plasma Cutting Machine (batch production).
Flame Cutting Machine
Principle: Uses oxygen + fuel gas (acetylene/propane) combustion to preheat the metal, then a high-pressure oxygen jet oxidizes and blows away the molten iron. Often used alongside welding equipment.
Applications: Thick carbon steel plates (50mm and above, even thicker).
Advantages: Low equipment cost, suitable for extremely thick plates.
Disadvantages: Large heat deformation, slow cutting speed, unsuitable for stainless steel.
Waterjet Cutting Machine
Principle: An ultra-high pressure stream of water (usually mixed with garnet abrasive) erodes the material.
Applications: Virtually all materials (metal, stone, glass, composites), especially materials sensitive to heat.
Advantages: No heat-affected zone (cold cutting process), cut does not alter material properties, no smoke or dust.
Disadvantages: Expensive equipment, relatively slow cutting speed, high consumable costs.

Tools are not inherently good or bad; the key is choosing the right one for the job. Regardless of the tool selected, safety protection (goggles, gloves, protective clothing) and standardized operation are always the top priority. Alongside cutting products, there is a related product category – drilling tools – which we will share with you in our next introduction.
