As new energy vehicles (NEVs) become increasingly popular for urban and daily use, the auto repair industry is transitioning from "mechanical repair" to "smart repair of the three-electric system." NEV repair is not a complete overthrow of traditional methods—it is a new combination of traditional tools, high-voltage safety equipment, and intelligent diagnostic devices.
1. High and Low Voltage—Both Pose Safety Risks to People and Vehicle Electronics
NEV repair has clear safety requirements:
Insulation kit: Must include certified insulated gloves, insulated shoes, and insulated mats—these are the lifeline of the job.
Repair area: No flammable materials within 2 meters (including other parked vehicles), equipped with firefighting supplies and professional electronic testing equipment.
Protection and warnings: Arc-flash face shield, isolation barriers.
2. Smart Diagnostics and Testing: Traditional Vehicles Lean Mechanical, NEVs Lean Electronic
Comprehensive diagnostic scanner: Mainstream third-party diagnostic tools can test battery balancing, motor calibration, and other functions—these are all-in-one devices, though generally expensive. There are also single-function, specialized testing devices offering excellent value for money.
BMS tester: Used to measure cell voltage and internal resistance—key for assessing battery health.
3. High-Voltage System Tools and Testing Equipment
High-grade multimeter and clamp meter: Must be CAT III 1000V or higher safety-rated products, used for measuring insulation resistance and real-time current.
Multi-function and targeted electronic diagnostic devices: Configurations for automotive, motorcycle, and marine yacht locksmithing, fault detection, quick maintenance, airbag ECU.
Charging equipment: For outdoor or indoor charging, keep equipment sheltered from rain and sun. Wall-mounted units are fine for home use; floor-standing units are typically commercial or for multi-vehicle use. Pay attention to charging equipment compatibility—different countries have different voltages and plug types. Both vehicle condition and charger condition can cause fire hazards.
4. Thermal Management Systems and Specialized Equipment
The three-electric system is extremely temperature-sensitive.
Coolant filler/bleeder: For independent cooling loops for the battery, motor, and electronics, a vacuum filler must be used to completely bleed air and prevent vapor lock.
Refrigerant recovery/recharge machine: Must be compatible with new environmentally friendly refrigerants.
Check with the vehicle's 4S shop and official brand regarding their policies on major component repairs—otherwise, you will not be able to perform repairs.
5. These "High-Efficiency Tools" Are Constantly Improving Performance
Lithium-ion cordless tools: Lithium-powered handheld tools and impact wrenches enable lightweight work, freeing you from external power cords.
Thermal imager: Quickly locates hidden faults such as overheating electrical connections and short-circuited battery modules.
Multi-function and professional electronic testers: Choose reputable brands.
Electric floor jack: Some light vehicles carry these onboard for more convenient lifting.
6. "Electrification Adaptation" of Traditional Tools
Insulated tool set: Wrenches and sockets must have insulation certification to prevent accidental shorts. Sockets should be chrome-vanadium steel, not carbon steel, because NEVs need more care than fuel vehicles. Low-quality repair tools can cause safety accidents. Carbon steel wrenches simply do not last as long—40-grade steel is best.
High-precision torque wrench: High-voltage connection bolts are extremely torque-sensitive; digital torque wrenches must be used for precise operation.
Load capacity upgrade: NEVs are heavier than fuel vehicles; hoists and jacks must have their load margins verified.
7. Industry Advice and the Future
Future tools will no longer work in isolation. AI-assisted smart repair and predictive maintenance will become mainstream. Repair professionals should pay attention to smart diagnostic devices with cloud connectivity.
Moving from mechanical repair to high-precision electrical and data analysis, tools are not just means to an end—they are a guarantee of safety. Embracing intelligent equipment and working with proper certification is the only right path for auto repair professionals in the NEV era.
